Panakhyda

During 2022-23, I photographed public memorial services for the fallen Heroes who gave their lives in the battle for Ukraine's independence. Most of the photographs were taken at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Lutsk or in the surrounding villages. In general it was western Ukraine, a region that did not experience active combat but has still lost so many of its sons and daughters due to the war.
In these images, I captured the pain we feel. They are talking about loss and death. Of the soul and eternity. Of God and the metaphysical. For me, it is crucial that this book serves as a memorial for the fallen Heroes and as a testament to the trials the living endure as they bid their dead and farewell on their final journey.
It is not customary for us to openly discuss photography during funeral rites. Yet this is part of our reality – one that deserves to be documented. Sadly, since the war began, it has become a constant part of our reality. Of course, our wounds are still fresh, and death remains prevalent in the media. But over time, the pain will dull. I want these images to serve as a lasting reminder of the high price we paid to preserve our national independence.

Glory to Ukraine, glory to Heroes.
